The tone is carefully chosen, the stories both shocking and fancifully constructed: African scam mails that have been gathering in our in-boxes over the years present a very special kind of targeted fraud. Excessive and bluntly direct, these messages use absurd language to depict personalities in tragically catastrophic situations in corrupt African countries.
The written offer promises lucrative (illegal) deals worth many millions of dollars and plays cleverly on widespread prejudices that prevail in both Europe and the USA. Numerous recipients have been successfully deceived and have suffered financially, a fact documented in internet forums in which victims and police explain the methods of deception used, and activists distribute scam-busting tips via email that show how to retaliate creatively.
In order to prevent this tragicomic episode in cyber criminality from disappearing into oblivion, Cry For Help! presents a collection of 36 of these nasty little masterpieces. But first and foremost this book is a series of brilliant illustrations by award winning artist Henning Wagenbreth: powerful images of characters and anecdotes from the emails, all laced with biting black humor. A return to the lino-cut technique and the use of special luminous colors adds a touch of the extraordinary to these works, making them stylistically unmistakable.
