The exhibition “Borrowing shades from shadows” is centred around the hypothesis that issues can be discussed, debatted and philosophised upon, without these taking a toll on their vehemence.
If shadows eventuate from a shading or obstruction of light rays, then “Borrowing shades from shadows” could imply any of the following or even more: (a) the temporary removal of the impediment or shade that is a cause of the shadow or (b) the provisional deduction of the “not-colour”/ absence of light that gives the shadow its umbra nature. The former gives room to view and analyse the object of interest in its real and not-shadowy form, while the latter enables the possibility of shedding light on an obscure entity.
In an age of financial, moral, social and religious crisis, art can lay claim on its right to treat sociocultural and politico-economic issues in all subtleness as well as intensity. In this age where bankers, politicians, Arch-Bishops or consumers try to run faster than their shadows; where people forget that fortune is as fickle as a banana leaf in the wind; where upon surfacing of a problem, everyone seeks the fault and reponsibility at the other, forgetting that while pointing a finger at the other, four fingers point back at you… art has no choice but to claim its rights.
The exhibition offers a podium for debate and questioning of banal and non-banal issues, without depriving them or robbing them of their intensity or profondeur. With the languages of communication being collages, drawings, paintings and installations, the exhibition orchestrates contemporary reflections on suburbanism, neo-despotism, racism or nomadism… in a symphony of four movements, entitled “Borrowing shades from shadows” and composed by Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung.
