Nina Jun at Art Miami 2013
by Dr. Barbara Aust-Wegemund, Art Historian

Known as Miami's premier anchor fair, Art Miami kicks off the opening day of Basel Art Week the first week of December when thousands of collectors, dealers, curators and artists descend upon Miami. World famous for its stylish gallery-like decor, its outstanding quality and extraordinary variety, Art Miami showcases the best in modern and contemporary art from more than 125 international art galleries. Art Miami maintains a preeminent position in America's contemporary art fair market. With a rich history, it is the original and longest-running contemporary art fair in Miami and continues to receive praise for the variety of unparalleled art that it offers. It is the important event for all serious collectors, curators, museum directors and interior designers providing an intimate look at some of the most important work at the forefront of the international contemporary art movement.

A lifelong fasciation with multiple bodies, sculptures, site-specific installations, video arts and ceramic objects shapes the work of Nina Jun. The glazed ceramic objects, seemingly helium-filled ceramic balloons, that The Cynthia Corbett Gallery selected to display at Art Miami reflect this focus of her work, when Nina Jun explains:

"My ceramics are playful explorations of helium balloons. They remind us to the principles of gravity and space and affect memories of childhood, dreams and lightheartedness to the viewer. I use the polka dots and butterflies as metaphor for stars or constellations in cosmos.”

Born in Seoul, Korea, artist Nina Jun lives and works in Los Angeles area. She received an MFA in Sculpture from California State University of Long Beach in 2001. Nina Jun is a sculptor whose body of work, in addition to ceramic works, includes site-specific installations and video art. In 2007, Jun, one of fifty women artists selected to exhibit in Southern California Women’s Caucus for Art’s retrospective of 26 years of feminist art, “Multiple Vantage Points” exhibited her ceramic/video installation at the show in Los Angeles. NCECA (National Council for Education of Ceramic Arts) has twice invited Jun to exhibit her ceramic/video installations at its conventions: in Portland, OR and in Kansas City, MO.

In December 2012 her ceramic balloon series was shown at Art Asia Miami Fair during Art Basel Miami Week and in 2013 at LA Art Show, artMRKT San Francisco, Art Southhampton, Houston Fine Art Fair, Toronto International Art Fair among others.

Unlike a physicist, who may take that a lightweight mylar filled with helium must rise up into Earth's atmoshpere, Nina Jun feels compelled to explore the paradox that her balloons cannot lift themselves up. To underline her message, as her innovative process, she hangs the ceramic balloons on walls just like 3-D paintings. What is our truth? It is the examination of mystery, which keeps us going and connects us all.
